Stuffing his plastic toy suitcase with what he considered essential treasures for his clandestine departure, John set out for parts unknown. Parents were inclined to limit a six-year old’s hopes and dreams. Although he got no further than up the block, his dad shook his head with a resigned sigh and declared no truer words, "John’s got fire in his belly and he's going places!" Maybe not in that moment...but someday.
That spark led John to graduate from Purdue University with a degree in Food Science. He proceeded to build a storied career in the food industry working for Kraft Foods, Tip Top Ice Cream in New Zealand, So Delicious Dairy Free, and Dave's Killer Bread. After nearly forty years, John decided to retire…and RE-FIRE his creative ambition. Firebelly Studio was born.
From an early age, John has felt a connection with woodworking. He was about 17 years old when he found a used pommel horse leather cover. He figured he would give that leather cover a second chance and build it a new pommel horse. To his surprise, he received negative feedback before even starting! Everyone said no way could he make one! With no training, no experience, he built that pommel horse despite the naysayers. The final product was impressive. No doubt, John took after his grandfather, who at nearly 80 years old built his second sawmill.

To RE-fire, and inspire, creative purpose everyday.
